# Visual authoring

Visual authoring turns ordinary Unity prefab-variant overrides into a distributable Patch Manager manifest. It is the recommended workflow for hierarchy changes and Unity object references.

* [Editing prefab variants](/doc/editing-prefab-variants-jDik1AIWwm) explains supported overrides, added GameObjects/components, automatic compilation, and effective preview.
* [Targets, stable IDs, and references](/doc/targets-stable-ids-and-references-8hNe8CpZ6r) explains how stock and patch-owned objects are identified and how references survive composition.
* [Dependencies, conflicts, and ordering](/doc/dependencies-conflicts-and-ordering-W2c7gryhWl) shows how patches coordinate without relying on accidental load order.

If you only need a small generated change, the [Code authoring](/doc/code-authoring-n5C0z3xYZ6) section may be more direct.
