# Getting started

Start here if you have not authored a prefab patch before. These pages take you from the basic model to a compiled, packaged visual patch.

* [What prefab patches are](/doc/what-prefab-patches-are-W7afIzfZz6) explains when prefab patching is the right tool, how it differs from replacing a prefab, and which authoring workflow to choose.
* [Create your first visual prefab patch](/doc/create-your-first-visual-prefab-patch-BfSbb7F1Vj) walks through linking a stock prefab, creating a variant, making an Inspector change, and compiling it.
* [Test and package a prefab patch](/doc/test-and-package-a-prefab-patch-7ilJc80KVu) covers previewing, in-game verification, Addressables ownership, and what belongs in a release.

Read these in order for your first patch. Once it works, continue with [Visual authoring](/doc/visual-authoring-nYu5hKptCs) for added objects, references, and cross-mod coordination.
